The Carl Kroening Interpretive Center sits surrounded by prairie and woodlands overlooking the Mississippi River. Inside, wander through an exhibit exploring the Mississippi River. You’ll discover the dangers of logging, “drive” a ’73 Barracuda, “visit” the Webber Baths and find out what happened to local clay.
The Center also features a unique found-object mural and displays of live amphibians and reptiles. Use our binoculars to watch the birds from inside comfort. Young visitors can dress-up like loggers, hold a farmers market, build with “clay” bricks, discover if they are larger than a Great Blue Heron, and explore the touch-and-see area.
A variety of free resources are also available to visitors. Borrow backpacks full of fun activities and information for exploring insects, trees, the river, or birds. Trail activity guides—available in English, Spanish and Hmong—turn investigating the prairie, forest and creek into family fun. Or borrow a book from our lending library. Snowshoes are available for a small rental fee.
Wild Birthday Parties
Kids will enjoy a one-hour outdoor activity with a party leader, followed by an open hour for games, gift opening and refreshments.
Wild Birthday Parties are offered year-round and are appropriate for children age four and older. Nature-based topics range from pond insects to birds, and snowshoeing to live animals. The cost is $90 for up to 15 children and six adults. We recommend calling a minimum of six weeks in advance to request a date.
